Lord of the rings A tapestry of

The Shire

The Shire was the homeland of the majority of the hobbits in Middle-earth. It was located in the northwestern portion of Middle-earth, in the northern region of Eriador, within the borders of the Kingdom of Arnor.

This is where the story begins

Rivendaell

Rivendell (Sindarin: Imladris) is a valley in J. R. R. Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, representing both a homely place of sanctuary and a magical Elvish otherworld. It is an important location in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, being the place where the quest to destroy the One Ring began.

Caradhras

Caradhras, also called the Redhorn and Barazinbar, was one of the mightiest peaks in the Misty Mountains. A pass crossed over it and was the most southerly point at which the Misty Mountains could be crossed.

A far too dangerous route

Khazad-dûm

Khazad-dûm, commonly known as Moria or the Dwarrowdelf, was an underground kingdom beneath the Misty Mountains. It was known for being the ancient realm of the Dwarves of Durin's Folk, and the most famed of all Dwarven realms.

Durin's Bane

Balrogs, or Valaraukar (plural of Valarauko, Quenya; "Demon of power"), were Maiar that were seduced and corrupted by Melkor into his service.

"I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You shall not pass!"

Lothlórien

Lothlórien, also known as Lórien, was a forest and Elven realm near the lower Misty Mountains. It was first settled by Nandor Elves, but they were later joined by a small number of Ñoldor and Sindar under Celeborn of Doriath and Galadriel, daughter of Finarfin. It was located on the River Celebrant, southeast of Khazad-dûm, and was the only place in Middle-earth where the golden Mallorn trees grew.

And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth.
